Tyrannosaurus Rex Classification

Biologists classify animals using terms such as "order", "family", "genus" and "species". These indicate how closely two animals are related to each other. For example:
  • Two animals which are of the exact same type, and can interbreed producing fertile offspring, are of the same species.

  • Two animals which are a bit more distantly related, are of the same genus but of different species, and so on.

  • Using this system, this how Tyrannosaurus Rex is classified.

    Scientific Classification
      Kingdom Animalia
      Phylum Chordata
      Class Sauropsida
      Superorder Dinosauria
      Order Saurischia
      Suborder Theropoda
      (unranked) Coelurosauria
      Superfamily Tyrannosauroidea
      Family Tyrannosauridae
      Genus Tyrannosaurus
      Species Tyrannosaurus rex

  • Currently one species of Tyrannosaurus, namely Tyrannosaurus rex is known. However other relatives, including some close relatives, are known.

  • Another type of dinosaur, Tarbosaurus, which has some similar features to Tyrannosaurus rex was once considered by some scientists to be very closely related to it. As a result, sometimes this dinosaur was called "Tyrannosaurus bataar"! Subsequent research has however suggested that Tarbosaurus was not so closely related after all, and today it is generally known as Tarbosaurus bataar.
